The sense of desolation increases if twisted irony to generate the sound is dark and without hope of a band that should be documented when the moment more "live" of its own existence ... the stage.
The perverse humor nihilist that pervades this recording since its very title (VITAL) is the essential ingredient to bear to try to listen to one of the most extraordinary examples of musical art of the seventies.
would also mean the mutilation of the original high-sounding name of the group, the omission of the term "generator" seems to conspire towards the so-veiled Nenci demonstration of total lack of energy and dynamism in the thinking of Peter Hammill sound and few infamous cohorts . The band does not "generate" ... but "de-generation."
The initial text "Ship of Fool" seems to fit the conditions forced on the edge of the group and its leader has always been:
The captain's in a coma, the lieutenant's on a drunk;
the owner's In His cabin with His special friend, the monk;
the midget's on the bridge, dispensing platitudes and junk -
Those wild and special places,
Those strange and dangerous places,
Those sad, sweet faces,
it's a Ship of Fools.
The four (of many!) Applause that precede the dark power of the captain comatose songwriting alone are sufficient to be a chill down my spine.
yet ...
already, but rather is VITAL a record of extraordinary intensity, a cry and consistent policy (but not desperate) a statement of intent to claim a proud identity.
There is more true light on a disk as directed and "no network" not at all wonderful (apparently) show fabulous post-progressive ... with the bright lights of the new technology to tell (in area) that stories serve only to "entertain" the audience bystander.
A concert of Van Der Graaf (with or without the "generator") has always been a challenge to both parties, musician and audience will share the responsibility "intellectuals" with the result and the risk factor for the audience is exactly the same (only declined otherwise) of what is on stage.
In the style of the overwhelming musical moment "on nerves" essentiality contemporary nihilistic punk Van Der Graaf these are offered to the few faithful fans exactly what they are adrift in the market of course ... but not as much of the ideas and art! In
disquieting loneliness against the sound of classical strings characterized mainly by poisoned and distorted (violin and cello) mixed with heavy sound of a low saturated almost always electrically powered and a battery often anarchic style in his interpreter (Guy Evans) voice Hammill does not give anyone anything, it spits the loneliness of imprisonment intellectual screams and called the army to the rescue of the few.
I do not think there is a larger disk LIVE Vital ...
